Dana Mackenzie finds herself working for a faceless financial institution—it’s either this or piercing ears at the mall—and while she’s grateful for a job, she has no intentions of following the corporate offices’ heartless orders.
When she’s instructed to repossess a 42-inch Sony television from an elderly couple, Dana intends to put her own twist on the assignment. But upon arriving at their run down house in a gang infested neighborhood, she’s horrified to find sweet old Mr. Sullivan murdered.
The homicide detective investigating the case is Nick Travis, Dana’s high school crush. Sparks ignite, but a dark secret threatens to keep them apart—unless Nick comes clean about the past.
Dana agrees to help Mr. Sullivan’s grieving family locate his grandson, a guy with a surprising new lifestyle who’s been missing since the day of the murder. Her good intentions put her in the thick of the murder investigation and on a collision course with the killer.

I realize that to someone who has personally experienced it, any depiction of rape can be too graphic. But I am a reader with a very low tolerance for violence and for me personally this book was well inside the bounds of good taste and acceptability. I read it months ago, and remember the book fondly as one of the best I've read this year. I'm sure there is a scene in it that the one star reviewer is referring to, but I don't remember it, nor do I remember being offended at any violence in the book.Product details

Fatal Debt Dana Mackenzie Mystery Book 1 edition by Dorothy Howell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed this mystery book given the likeable characters present and the humorous passages that struck me funny like, "...if something went down, I decided to take Jade simply because she had the widest butt and would offer the best cover", "I drove in, circled several floors, finally found an empty space, and performed a docking maneuver Captain Picard would have envied" and "My initial surge of adrenaline kept me going, but running in thigh-high boots and a strapless bra wasn't the best way to go." Because Dana both helps and hinders the investigation at times and the romantic tension with regards to the police detective, Nick, is kept light yet tightly wound I'd give the book high marks in my opinion. Some editing issues remain such as this passage "Ruby gave me a confident not and left" which keep it from being a 5-star book, but as much fun as I had with the characters and the storyline I'd gladly purchase more Dana Mackenzie Mystery books!
When I change the world, I'll only let good books like Fatal Debt by Dorothy Howell in my library. Wait, I'm using Dana Mackenzie' s favorite line of frustration, which I've used myself and likely you have as well. Dana Mackenzie is the too smart for her own good, vivacious central character. A debt collector for Mid American Loans she struggles with her duties and her compassion for her debt ridden clients. Especially when she walks in on the murder of Arthur Sullivan. She's known the Sullivan family and thinks of them like family. Now guilt ridden believing she could have stopped it, she vows to try to find the killer. She reluctantly has to share information, sometimes, with high school heartthrob and now police detective, Nick Travis whom she loathes, but still has longings for. The list of suspects grows as does her relationships with Nick, her parents, quirky co-workers and clients. A fun light read which will have you guessing with the delightful, irksome, head strong, vivacious, Dana. I can't wait to get on with the continuing adventures of Dana in Fatal Luck.
Dana Mackenzie,” was an Asset Manager for a lending company and she worked with customers that were behind on their payments. During a house call Dana found a body, and became involved in a murder of one of her customers. This led to a series of threats against her life.
As she began working with the lead detective, she discovered that he was the ex-boyfriend of her best friend. Uncomfortable over the way that relationship ended, and knowing that she had a crush on him back then, made it difficult to work together to find this killer before something happened to her.
This mystery had a good plot and was a quick read anticipating the clues she discovered. Romance, too, was brewing in spite of how hard she pushed those feelings away, to keep you wondering where this would lead her.
I received this book as a free download. With that being said, I enjoyed the book. I thought it was funny at times. What I didn't like about the book was that it was so similar to Stephanie Plum books, it felt almost like I was reading fan fiction with the names changed... Dana seems to find trouble and get mixed up in these mysteries same as Stephanie... Dana's love interest now and in High School is Nick, a police officer.. in the Plum books, Stephanie's love interest now and in High School is Joe, a police officer. Dana's Special Op repo guy is Slade, Stephanie's bounty hunter is Ranger, also a Special Op guy. Dana's neighborhood in CA has seen better days, Stephanie's in NJ, same thing...etc.. Even with so many similarities, it was still a fun read.
This book could have been so much better. The plot had possibilities and the author has some talent. Instead we are to be entranced with a woman who has no "little grey cells" that I could discern. She was extremely immature. Her actions in destroying a customer's checks at work should have gotten her fired and facing possible legal consequences, but she was quite proud of her actions. Dana withholds information that may be relevant to a murder investigation from the cops because the detective wouldn't "share" information with her.
As a very active 62 year old who teaches online, writes in several venues, and still has a very passionate life; I found her ageism annoying. I finished the book, hoping that she would come to learn more about people over 50, but no. There was also a xenophobic element to the character that was distressing.
I won't be reading more from this author.
