Dave Franklin has written eight novels. His caustic, profanity-filled prose should be approached with caution.

"Thomas turned away from browsing the shelves of the Goodreads user, wanting to put his fist through the screen. These bitter nobodies, sprinkling their one stars around like bitter confetti...How was it even possible to get so enraged and disgusted by something that had been made up? For God's sake it wasn't real, it hadn't happened, and you're spewing vitriol because it's not to your taste?"
Hmm...
Which is worse? Authors behaving badly or reviewers who read four pages and assign one-star?
Well, I have no clue, but I think we can all agree, it makes for some great entertainment.
Thomas, a self-published author, has given up. He's sick of pouring his heart onto the pages only to have it mocked by reviewers on Goodreads. Then one day, he comes face-to-face with a somewhat sinister "pro-artist" organization.
He is offered sympathy, and counseling.
"Criticism has always been part and parcel of an artist's life. Artists are not born perfect and they make mistakes like anyone else, although I've always believed that a life spent making mistakes has more honour than one of doing nothing. Criticism can allow an artist to understand errors, avoid repeating them and to hone their work...
But, of course, this is an ideal scenario. The fact remains that some people want to teach you to swim while others...ah, others just want to hold your head under the water until you drown."
The group also offers Thomas a solution to his reviewer problem.
The moral of this story is that it's probably NOT a good idea to have a "pigs-write-better-than-this" shelf.
So there you go, Dave. Interesting concept, good, involving plot, believable characters. Four solid stars.
Please don't kill me.

The Goodreads Killer 1 A Revenge Fantasy edition by Dave Franklin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I had heard vague rumors on Goodreads of authors acting badly and reviewers giving mean-spirited reviews, but I personally have had no experience of this. I saw where someone had reviewed this book, it piqued my interest, and I read it out of curiosity. It's a short quick read and, at about the price of an energy drink, it was certainly cheap enough. Myself, I'm both an author and a reviewer on Goodreads. Although, I have only one book published, I've reviewed many, many books.
The Goodreads Killer is a satire or parody about an author who receives a bad review, is obsessed with it, and sets out, with some professional help, to exact revenge. Of course, being a satire, everything is overblown. The sex scene is outlandish, and the violence is exaggerated. The author seems to poke fun at writers who write in an overly descriptive, flowery style and even the most mundane occurrences are described in an annoyingly exaggerated fashion.
It bugged me a little that the author didn't use quotation marks. From the word usage, it's obvious that the author is British. Is it acceptable in Britain to not use quotation marks? I don't know? This is not really a book I would recommend to others, but I do give a great deal of credit to the author for coming up with this original idea. Even though the book wasn't exactly to my taste in reading, I gave three stars for the author's creativity. It was, however, humorous considering the circumstances of how it came to be written.
Rendezvous Rock
Huh. Still trying to figure out what I just read. Glad it was a free. Here's the run down on Dave Franklin's short story about a 3 bk self pub author named Thomas.....Tired of vicious reviews on Goodreads especially by reviewer Bryan Acari (whose an aspiring author/musician), Thomas goes off the deep end one night. During Thomas's nutty pity party down by the river he's beaten up by what appears to be a psycho homeless man who threatens/directs Thomas to a pro-active agency that supports artists. This agency offers sympathy and a free solution of sorts for these types of negative reviewers..."off the dude". So Thomas does. In a very gory violent manner Thomas murders Bryan Acari and along the way has an unusual sexual encounter with the agency's secretary. If the story isn't strange enough the ending was a head scratcher. The agency's violent front man (the homeless dude from earlier in the story) is banging on Thomas's door with more viscous threats. Say what?!? Thomas followed through with the guys advice so I'm not sure what the heck that was about.
Have no idea of the author's intent here. Was this satire? A parody? Dark humor? (trust me - it wasn't funny). A commentary on Goodreads and similar sites? Use of the internet? More than anything it appears to be the work of a self pub author sharing a revenge fantasy. And that's okay (again, glad it was free). I'm pretty sure most will interpret this story as preachy/messagey but it did make me dwell on the author/reviewer situation more than I would have. Would I recommend this novella to my reader friends? Uh,No! In the spirit of Obi Wan... "move along, this isn't the story you're looking for". And just leave it at that.
Given the title of this book, I thought I would love it! Also, the author just released the 2nd part of the story on January 7, 2014!
Unfortunately, it did take me quite a while to get through it. I started it and put it down, then picked it up again... The premise is a bit odd and the story does get a bit graphic. The protagonist is an author who can not write anymore as he is obsessed with a bad review he received on Goodreads.com. He has an opportunity to exact revenge...
If you are into revenge stories, you may enjoy this a bit more than I did!
