I can't believe I haven't reviewed this book yet - I've been using it for at least a year! I'm so utilitarian that my idea of a care package is just some cookies shoved into a Ziploc bag. If I'm feeling friendly, I might also write your name on it with a sharpie. This book is full of ideas for sprucing up those handmade, homemade gifts without breaking your budget or taxing your crafty cells. In fact, I wouldn't really call these ideas "crafty", just elegant and simple. From homemade tags made out of upcycled materials to delicious, healthy recipes, this books takes all the work out of the process of welcoming a new baby or neighbor, or even sending along condolences.*The author sent me a digital copy for an honest review; receiving a free copy in no way influenced my review. These are the actual thoughts I thunk. :)

Gift It From Scratch edition by Kathie Lapcevic Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks Reviews
Easy to follow recipes with normal ingredients along with gifting suggestions. Bread, rolls, soups, cookies, cakes, cupcakes, beverages - it's all here! I made the Ginger Creams with gluten free flour and the resulting cookies are wonderful! Let the baking begin!
Diverse and thorough compendium of recipes. Best of all, Lapcevic gives "Gift Giving Idea" suggestions with each recipe. Perfect book for people who love to cook for others, or who are organizing a meal-tree for the parents of a newborn, or for someone who is sick.
Some of these recipes sound absolutely incredible and I cannot wait to dig in and try some of them. Kathie's instructions are clear, easy to follow, and appropriately detailed. And she is totally right ... each one of them would be fantastic to serve up as gifts! I know I will referring to this cookbook often when I need something creative to give a friend or loved one!
This book by Kathie Lapcevic is just lovely. I enjoyed the recipes, along with the the suggestion on how to gift each of them. I love to bake and cook so gifting from the kitchen is a very personal gift that contains a lot of love and heart. It is something I do often and always am looking for new recipes and ways to gift homemade food from my kitchen so this book was perfect for me.
The recipes are not ones I have seen in other food gift cookbooks. I was pleased to see that Ms. Lapcevic used whole natural ingredients. You won't see processed foods in these recipes. Many recipes could easily be converted to vegan. I noticed also that many of the ingredients I have right in my kitchen as normal pantry supplies. I always am pleased when I can find everything right at home. Makes it easy to make a gift on short notice when I can bake or cook something as a gift.
She also suggest looking for containers at second hand stores. I have almost eliminated all plastic storage container in my home and the thought of having to give someone a gift in one really doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy about adding more plastic to our environment. So recycling/repurosing containers from second hand stores is a delightful idea when trying to be green. It also makes it easier because you aren't using one of your own containers and crossing your fingers you will get it back.
I like how the chapters are divided in the book and the tips at the beginning of the book. It is easy to follow, the recipes are straight forward, and the gifting ideas are charming. Over all this book is just lovely and I recommend it for anyone new to gifting from the kitchen as well as those of us who have been for a while.
"The art of giving food gifts expresses love in a way that something expensive picked up at the store simply cannot do. Homemade gifts are not cheap, but rather priceless and full of that which cannot be bought, love. Homemade food includes a bit of ourselves, our energies, our spirits, and yes, our love. It's these unseen, ethereal ingredients that make homemade food gifts something special." from Gift it From Scratch
The above quote from the introduction, hooked me at once because it's so true. It has really caused me to think about why we do some of the things we do, like taking a meal to someone who has had a death in the family. It's not about the food, or even the "help", it's about the love.
Gift it From Scratch has recipes for meals, breads, sweets and drinks that are great for giving. All the recipes are whole food recipes and pretty unique. I mean whoever heard of chocolate malt cookies? My "Whopper" loving kids will love them, there's no doubt about that.
I really appreciate Kathie pairing the recipes together and suggesting gift giving ideas. I also appreciate her tips on cooking and gift giving.
